At Wimboldsley we aim to foster and encourage children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of languages and cultures. French is the modern foreign language taught throughout the school. We provide opportunities for children to communicate for practical purposes, express their ideas and thoughts and gain an awareness of where French is spoken in the World.
We have Year 5/6 Language Ambassadors who help to promote language learning at our school through involvement in activities and writing newsletters/competitions. We have a good link with Middlewich High School who visit with their Ambassadors and we are planning to work on joint activities in the future. We have a sense of pride when we hear our youngest children using their French greetings around school.
We also embrace other languages spoken by families in our school celebrating Language Days. One of our Teaching Assistants in KS2, Mrs Dula, who is Hungarian enjoys sharing her heritage at regular opportunities and during European Day of Languages.
Our Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum is based on the Primary Languages Network scheme of work showing clear progression of the skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar and phonics. We build on children’s prior learning with clear end points for each year group. We recognise the importance of laying foundations with transferable skills for future language learning in KS3.
