MfL

At Wimboldsley we aim to foster and encourage children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of languages and cultures. French is the modern foreign language taught throughout the school. We provide opportunities for children to communicate for practical purposes, express their ideas and thoughts and gain an awareness of where French is spoken in the World.

JANET CLARKE

I have been Modern Foreign Languages subject leader for over 15 years and enjoy stimulating and encouraging children to have a love of learning French. I am an active member of the Association of Language Learning and the Primary language Specialist for the Manchester branch. I attend weekend Conferences and online training sessions on a regular basis to keep up to date with new developments in language learning I have been privileged to organise and deliver CPD for Primary Language teachers across the country leading workshops both online and face to face, writing articles for the Languages Today publication and most recently filming a webinar for the National College for School Leadership. I have recently appointed Year 5/6 Language Ambassadors who help to promote language learning at our school through involvement in activities and writing newsletters/competitions.  We have a good link with Middlewich High School who visit with their Ambassadors and we are planning to work on joint activities in the future. I have a sense of pride when I hear our youngest children using their French greetings around school. Our Year 6 children visit France annually with children from our Federated School and have opportunities to use their French language in the markets and local shops.

In addition, Mrs Garland who enjoys languages and travelling also helps to support children in their lessons and our Ambassadors. We also embrace other languages spoken by families in our school celebrating Language Days. Most recently one of our Teaching Assistants in KS2, Mrs Dula, who is Hungarian enjoyed sharing her heritage during European Day of Languages.

Our Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum is based on the Primary Languages Network scheme of work showing clear progression of the skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar and phonics. We build on children’s prior learning with clear end points for each year group. We recognise the importance of laying foundations with transferable skills for future language learning in KS3.
