PSHE and RSE

At Wimboldsley CP School, PSHE is at the core of what we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing the ‘whole child’ intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually.

Through our whole-school approach to PSHE, it is our belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the curriculum and beyond in later life.

PSHE is taught across the school from EYFS - Year 6 on a weekly basis and as a school, we follow the Kapow PSHE scheme. Our PSHE curriculum covers the statutory requirements for teaching primary Health education and Relationships education from September 2020. It contains lessons for teaching all aspects of the guidelines, including the non-statutory aspects of primary sex education. The programme develops skills and knowledge in a values-based context which enables schools to convey and enhance their own values, learning and behaviour, supporting these whole-school approaches to developing pupil wellbeing.

We have always believed that PSHE should be at the heart of every curriculum as It's a chance to give every child and young person an equal opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge they need to thrive now and in the future. All children have something special to offer our school and should feel valued within the Wimboldsley family.

Why do we teach RSE?

Children at Wimboldsley Primary School are growing up in world that is exciting but also sometimes challenging. We want them to be confident, kind, respectful and well-prepared for the changes that come with growing up.

The department for Education requires all primary schools to teach:

  • Relationships Education (all about families, friendships, respect, and staying safe-both in real life and online)
  • Health Education (about physical health, mental wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, puberty , and first aid)

We also choose to teach some additional age -appropriate sex education so that children feel prepared for the changes of adolescence and secondary school.

What will my child learn?

Relationships Education includes;

  • Families and people who care for me
  • Caring friendships
  • Respectful relationships
  • Online relationships
  • Being safe

Health Education includes:

  • Mental wellbeing
  • Online safety
  • Physical health and fitness
  • Healthy eating
  • Drugs, alcohol and tabacco awareness
  • Health and prevention (includin hygeine and sun safety)
  • Basic First Aid
  • The changing adolescent body (puberty)

Sex Education (non-statutory):

In year 5 and 6 , children learn about how babies are born and conceived, and about the emotional and physical changes linked to growing up. This goes beyond the science curriculum but helps children feel confident, safe and prepared.

How do we teach it?

  • RSE is taught through PSHE lessons, Science, assemblies
  • Teaching is always age appropriate , respectful and inclusive of all pupils
  • Children are encouraged to ask questions in a safe environment
  • Sometimes lessons are taught in mixed classes, but there may be occasions where boys and girls are taught seperately (e.g about puberty)

Working with parents

We believe RSE works best when home and school work together. Parents will always be informed before sensitive topics are taught and can view resources if they wish.

Right to withdraw

  • Parents cannot withdraw their child from Relationships Education, Health Education or Science lessons
  • Parents can request to withdraw their child from non-statutory sex education (not including reproduction or puberty taught in science lessons). Requests can be made in writing to the Headteacher after a discussion with your chuld's class teacher about your concerns

Safeguarding

Children are taught in safe and supportive environments . If a child raises a concern about their safety or wellbeing , staff will follow the school's Safeguarding and Child  Protection procedures

Inclusion and Equality

All lessons are designed so that every child can take part, including those with additional needs. Teaching will reflect our diverse society and encourage respect for difference
